WiseOceans Academy<\/h2>\n

Mangrove forests are a marine habitat found in sub-tropical and tropical coastal waters. Just like any forest they are made up of trees<\/span>. M<\/span>angrove trees are specially adapted to be able to grow despite the high amount of salt and salt water. Mangrove forests are found in the intertidal zone, where the land meets the sea. The roots and the waterways create a complex habitat, important for both animals and humans, <\/span>let\u2019s<\/span> talk about why.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Vital habitats <\/h4>\n\n\n

Mangroves support a huge diversity of animals at many stages of life. These forests are great nursery grounds; a place many animals come to lay their eggs or have their young. This is due to the safety they provide, small creatures can hide amongst the roots away from predators. <\/span>They also provide\u202fa vast variety\u202fof food for animals to eat, even the <\/span>trees <\/span>themselves<\/span> are the food of other animals.\u202f<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Protection  <\/h4>\n\n\n

Mangrove forests<\/span>\u202fslow down and reduce the impact of waves\u202fon our coastlines. This prevents beaches eroding, as large waves\u202fcan\u202fremove sand and stones. They also protect homes and infrastructure built on our coastlines.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Food and Money<\/h4>\n\n\n

Many<\/span> coastal <\/span>communities rely on mangroves for<\/span> timber, fuel, medicine, and food.<\/span> T<\/span>hey also provide opportunities for eco-tourism<\/span>, as many tourists and visitors want to visit such incredible wildlife.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Carbon Storage<\/h4>\n\n\n

Like all plants and trees, mangroves remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen. They store more carbon per hect<\/span>are than rainforests!<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n
